Drivers reminded to be alert to farm equipment on rural roads

Drivers reminded to be alert to farm equipment on rural roads

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Agriculture and the Illinois Department of Transportation are reminding drivers to be alert for farm equipment.

They say because of the unseasonably warm and dry weather, many farmers were able to finish their field preparations early this year and are now ready to start planting. That means farm traffic on rural roads will increase drastically the next few weeks, much sooner than usual.

“Field work got off to an early start this year because of the mild weather,” IDOA Acting Director Bob Flider said.  “I want to encourage motorists to drive carefully and to be alert for slow-moving farm vehicles on rural roadways until the work is complete.”

ISP to patrol construction zones more closely

(KFVS) - The Illinois State Police District 13 Interim Commander, Lieutenant Thomas Stehley announced Tuesday that troopers will be watching construction zones closely while improvements are being made to area roads.

ISP says each year, hundreds of work zones present hazards, inconveniences and delays to drivers. According to ISP, state-wide in 2009, provisional data shows 31 people were killed in work zone crashes, 25 of those deaths were driver or passenger, five were construction workers and one pedestrian.

According to ISP, on Feb. 2, random details were implemented at I-57, mile post 65 near West Frankfort. They say troopers wrote nine citations and 10 warnings for cellphone use in a construction zone along with, 11 citations and three warnings for speeding through a construction zone.

ISP offers tips for drivers during the winter months

ISP offers tips for drivers during the winter months

(KFVS) - The Illinois State Police are warning driver to take the necessary precautions before getting behind the wheel.

ISP says car safety is equally important to driving safety while on the roads. Extreme weather can have a devastating impact on driving conditions, especially when ice and snow are involved.

“Although our area of the state experiences less snowfall than the northern region, we do have our share of ice storms,” said Lieutenant Steve Shields, District 22 Interim Commander.  “People need to remember that, regardless of the type of vehicle they drive, nothing handles well on ice.  Please don’t have a false sense of security and decide to travel during an ice storm.  Doing so puts many lives at risk.”

ISP offers the following safety tips for drivers to keep in mind during the winter months:

IDOT: Crashes with deer continue to decline

IDOT: Crashes with deer continue to decline

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday deer vs. car collisions declined in 2010 and remind drivers to be alert for deer along the roads during one of the most active times of the year.

IDOT says the number of car-deer crashes dropped to 17,135 in 2010, a decrease from 18,849 in 2009 and the lowest total since 1999. According to the latest IDOT statistics released Tuesday, 77 percent of crashes happened on rural roads and 67 percent during periods of darkness.

“Deer crashes can be especially difficult to avoid," said Acting Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider. "The best measures to avoid accidents and injuries are to  slow down, wear a safety belt and remain alert this fall driving through areas where deer are likely to be seen. The encouraging news is that collisions with deer in Illinois continue to decline.

Applications accepted for EMS subcommittee

(KFVS) - Lt. Governor Sheila Simon is accepting applications for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) subcommittee of the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council (GRAC).

The subcommittee will work to improve EMS services throughout rural Illinois.  It's charged with identifying barriers to providing adequate EMS service in rural Illinois. Among those challenges are long ambulance response times that put patients at risk and recruiting and retaining the qualified emergency medical service personnel necessary to provide life-saving care to citizens in need, according to Lt. Gov.

IDOT announces lane closures over holdiay weekend

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced road work will be suspended where possible over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

“With heavy traffic expected as usual during the holiday weekend, IDOT is providing a list of closures in advance to help motorists plan their trips,” said Acting Transportation Secretary Ann Schneider.  “With less construction and heavy equipment in use this weekend, traffic congestion can be reduced, and safety and traffic flow will continue to improve.”

Starting at 3 p.m. Friday, September 2, IDOT says it will suspend all non-emergency road work and open up as many lanes as possible through midnight on Monday, September 5. According to IDOT, some construction zones will continue to have lane closures in effect because of the nature of some of the projects.

IDOT is urging drivers to slow down, obey posted speed limits and drive with caution through work zones.
