Police say driver cited after not slowing down, hitting semi on I-57

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Police are investigating a crash on southbound I-57, mile post 72.5 around 12:26 p.m. Thursday, November 15.

According to police, Robert E. Hayes, 60 from Centralia was driving a semi and was stopped in traffic on I-57 southbound in the right lane due to road construction. They say Trent W. Earnhart, 26 from West Frankfort, was driving a blue and silver 1999 Chevy utility was traveling southbound in the right lane and failed to reduce speed, hitting the semi in the rear.

Police say Earnhart had non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the Franklin County hospital for treatment. They say he was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

According to police, the highway was shut down to one lane for an hour and a half.
