Send holiday cheer to troops with 'Holiday Mail for Heroes' program

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross will be collecting and distributing cards that send words of encouragement, gratitude and cheer to America's heroes for the holiday season.

The Red Cross is inviting the public to send messages of thanks and holiday cheer until Dec. 7 by mailing them to:

Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

To ensure that cards are delivered on time for the holidays, the Red Cross says they must be postmarked no later than Dec. 7. Individuals are asked to refrain from sending "care packages," monetary donations or using glitter or any other kinds of inserts with the cards.

According to the Red Cross, the company Pitney Bowes Inc. receives cards at the special Holiday Mail post office box, and screens them for hazardous materials. The company screens, packages and ships the cards at no charge.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The West Frankfort City Council has set October 31 as the date for Trail of Treats and trick or treating.

The Trail of Treats will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. and the trick or treating hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m.

The West Frankfort Police Department wants everyone to have an enjoyable and safe Halloween and has provided some safety tips and reminders for parents and children:

You can submit your favorite Halloween costume photo of an adult, child or pet and be entered for a chance to win prizes!

The KFVS12 Halloween Photo Contest started Tuesday, Oct. 2. The submission period is from 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday to 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The voting period runs from 12 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

Prizes will be awarded for best children's costume, adult costume and best pet costume.

Grace & Glory Music Festival Oct. 26 in West Frankfort

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Grace & Glory Music festival will be at 5 p.m. Friday, October 26 and marks the beginning of an the first annual three-day Christian Music Festival to be held in West Frankfort at the city park.

Organizers say there will be 20 live acts including special speaker Ben Burns from Carbondale,Ill. Recording artists and performers will be coming from all around the midwest,including Chicago, Nashville and Clarksville Tenn.

There will be many genres of music from hip hop,heavy metal, contemporary, electronic and hard rock and solo acoustic. Although their styles may differ, organizers say they will all have one thing in common: to entertain with a positive Christian message.
