Registration open for 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut | Events

(KFVS) - Registration for the 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is now open.

The next ShakeOut will take place on Feb. 7 at 10:15 a.m. Organizers say this date coincides with the anniversary of the Feb. 7, 1812 earthquake near New Madrid, Mo. They say this earthquake was one of at least three magnitude 7 or greater events that struck in the winter of 1811-1812, and forever changed the landscape of the region.

Last year, organizers say they had 2.4 million participants in the ShakeOut. This year, they are working to have 3 million participate in earthquake safety, preparedness and mitigation activities.

The ShakeOut is your chance to practice what to do before a disaster happens in your community, and to get better prepared for a quick recovery. Even if you or your organization participated in the ShakeOut in 2011 or 2012, they encourage you to participate again in 2013. They say you may have new students, new employees or other changes in your environment since last year.
