2012 Ewing Demonstration Fall field day Sept. 13

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - The University of Illinois Extension will host their annual Ewing Demonstration Center Fall field day on Thursday, September 13 at 9 a.m.

The field day will be at the farm in Ewing, located north of the Ewing grade school on North Ewing Road (watch for signs).

According to the university, the ongoing research this year consisted of a Liberty Soybean plot, Soybean planting date trial, insecticide/fungicide trial on soybeans and wheat variety plot.

The topics to be discussed at the field day include:

  • Dealing with herbicide carryover in wheat, corn, and soybeans. Aaron Hager or Doug Maxwell from U of I extension will discuss what herbicides are more persistent due to the dry weather and what steps need to be taken in order to avoid crop injury.  In addition herbicide resistant weeds will be addressed.
  • Mike Plumer, retired U of I extension and private consultant, and a cover crop expert will talk about establishing cover crops.  Several acres of corn have been destroyed and erosion will be a potential problem, producers might look at cover crops and their advantages. He will highlight some of the most popular cover crops and benefits.
  • Scott Ebelhar, a Beck’s Hybrid PFR director and southern region agronomist will talk about the Pro’s and Con’s of both Liberty and Round Up Soybeans and evaluate the Beck’s plot at the center.

Other topics include FSA disaster update and a NRCS EQIP update.
