WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) - The Night's Shield Children's Shelter is proud to announce plans for their 2nd Annual Midnight 5K Run/Walk Fundraiser, in honor of Erin Davis Howell, to be held on August 18.
Runners, walkers and spectators of all ages are encouraged to come and show their support. The event will kick off at Gold's Gym in Marion, Ill. starting at 10 p.m. with the race beginning at 11 p.m. and concluding with awards at midnight.
Erin Davis Howell (1980-2011) was a grateful volunteer who helped many years in the shelters efforts and was very close with shelter staff. The event was dedicated in her honor at last year's inaugural race.
The Night’s Shield Children’s Shelter is a private, non-profit organization that provides 24-hour emergency shelter for abused, neglected and/or abandoned children from the entire state. Money raised from the 5K will benefit the children directly with activities and extra supplies that are continually needed during their stay.
Last year, organizers say runners came for the event from as far as Richmond Heights, Mo. as well as a vacationer from Las Vegas, Nev. One-hundred and twenty-two participants enjoyed the race including five children for the "Fun Run" one mile trek. Again, the first place runner will be knighted with a crown and scepter the made authentically by the crafts department at the Shelter, as well as receive a first place medal. The Night's Shield hopes to double the number of racers this year.
Information including registration, sponsorships, volunteer forms and current needs list can be found on The Night's Shield website at www.thenightsshield.org. You can also call 618-932-6400 if you have any questions.
