USDA announces sign up for 2010 crop losses

(KFVS) - The USDA Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Scherrie Giamanco announced Monday the Supplemental Revue Assistance Payments program enrollment for the 2010 crop year losses began Nov. 14 and ends June 1, 2012.

To qualify for a SURE payment, the farm must be in a county that was declared a disaster for 2010 and have at least a 10 percent production loss that affects one crop of economic significance.

The USDA says farms located outside a disaster county are eligible for SURE benefits if they had a production loss greater or equal to 50 percent of the normal production on the farm.

Service planned to mark anniversary of mine disaster

WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) - A memorial service will be held to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Orient #2 mine disaster.

That service will take place on Wednesday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m. It will be held at the First Christian Church on South Cherry Street.

Organizers invite family and friends of the 119 miners who lost their lives in the explosion. Members of the community are also invited.

A candle will be lit in honor of each miner. As their name is read during the service, the flame will be extinguished. A moment of silence will mark the exact time of the explosion.

That explosion is considered one of the worst mining disasters in our nation's history. It gained national attention and resulted in the passage of the Federal Coal Mining Safety Act of 1952.
