Rend Lake fishing report

BENTON, IL (KFVS) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released their Rend Lake fishing report for the main lake and tributaries.

The fishing report includes:

Largemouth Bass

  • Rating - good
  • Bait of choice - worms, rattle traps, jig and trailer, spinner baits, square bill baits
  • Suggested location - fish in shallow bays near brush cover and bushes. Fish around bridges and along the rocks. Fish being caught in 4-6 ft. of water on main lake
  • Regulations - 14" minimum length limit, 6 daily creel limit. One fish daily creel limit in ponds 14" minimum length

Crappie

  • Rating - excellent
  • Bait of choice - fish with medium and small minnows. Quarter-ounce pink and white tub jigs
  • Suggested location - fish are in deep water. Fish 8-15 ft, deep over brush and on edges of water.

Junior champions crowned at the Ill. State Fair

ILLINOIS (KFVS) - The Illinois State Fair crowns the First Grand Champions in the Junior Livestock Show.

The new champions include:

  • 1st place - James Banas, 13, of the Saratoga 4-H Club won with his Cornish Cross Trio
  • 2nd place - Sam Shafer, 19, of the Jolly Workers 4-H Club won with his White Pekin Ducks
  • Grand Champion - Kenzie Schlipf, 13, of the Dunlap Dynamite 4-H Club won with her New Zealand Rabbit Meat Pen
  • Reserve Grand Champion - Mallory Munster, 18, of the LeRoy 4-H

The Illinois State Fair will be Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

A schedule of events will include:

  • Friday, August 12 - County Fair and Horse Racing Day. More than 70 county fair queens and 105 fairs and expositions from across the state are represented at the fair.

The story hour will be at 11 a.m. and is for three, four and five year olds.

The movie, "Sword and the Stone," will be shown at 1 p.m.

Ill. communities encouraged to enter 29th annual Gov.'s Home Town Awards

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Illinois communities of all sizes are encouraged to enter the 29th Annual Governor's Home Town Awards competition.

The GHTA recognizes volunteers whose hard work and dedication greatly improves their communities.

The deadline to submit applications is August 15.

Awards will be given in six project categories based on the six community population divisions.

Applications can be submitted by a variety of community representatives like local governments, schools, community organizations, chamber of commerce, community action agencies, area agencies on aging or local job training organizations.

Volunteer judges will evaluate the applications on need, use of resources and impact.
