ROYALTON, IL (KFVS)-

Two people have major injuries after a crash the Franklin County sheriff says involved alcohol.

Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones says a 1994 GMC pickup truck traveling east on Hwy. 149 just west of Royalton lost control on the left side of the road (north side), hit a utility pole, overturned and came to rest on the tires around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday.

Dustin J. Jennings, 25, of Marion and Adam Ray Jennings, 25, of West Frankfort were taken to Herrin Hospital with major injuries.

The driver, Dustin Jennings was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.  Sheriff Jones says DUI charges are pending.

Investigation underway into church fire in Christopher

CHRISTOPHER, IL (KFVS)-

A Heartland community is left in shock after a well-known landmark goes up in flames. Firefighters were called to the First Baptist Church just before 4:30 Monday morning. Fire crews say the blaze started in the back of the building and spread forward in just a few hours.

Crews were back on scene Tuesday morning. Christopher Fire Captain Tim Crawford says crews are tearing down part of the wall so investigators can get inside and look around. He says the investigation will take a few days.

Jim and Phyllis Kirkpatrick just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Six decades ago, the happy couple stood outside the First Baptist Church smiling. For decades the Kirkpatrick's have lived just behind the church. But Monday morning they got a surprise wake up.

"Got up and went to the door and they told us the fire was out there," Jim Kirkpatrick said.

USDA announces sign up for 2010 crop losses

USDA announces sign up for 2010 crop losses

(KFVS) - The USDA Farm Service Agency State Executive Director Scherrie Giamanco announced Monday the Supplemental Revue Assistance Payments program enrollment for the 2010 crop year losses began Nov. 14 and ends June 1, 2012.

To qualify for a SURE payment, the farm must be in a county that was declared a disaster for 2010 and have at least a 10 percent production loss that affects one crop of economic significance.

The USDA says farms located outside a disaster county are eligible for SURE benefits if they had a production loss greater or equal to 50 percent of the normal production on the farm.

National Influenza vaccination week

National Influenza vaccination week

(KFVS) - The Illinois Department of Health says National Influenza Vaccination Week will be December 4 through 10.

The national observance was established to highlight the importance of influenza vaccinations and encourage more people to be vaccinated after the holiday season, into January and beyond.

“Getting vaccinated is the single best way for people to protect not only themselves against flu, but their loved ones as well,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Acting Director Dr. Kenneth Soyemi.  “The flu season typically runs from October to May, with the peak around January, so get vaccinated today before all the holiday parties and family gatherings.”

The IDPH says one of the biggest myths about the flu is the person gets the flu from a flu shot. They say the influenza vaccination cannot give you the flu because the flu shot contains killed viruses, and the nasal spray has weakened viruses that cannot cause illness.
