ISP warns against leaving kids, pets in hot cars

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - The Illinois State Police is reminding people that children and pets should never be left alone in a hot car.

According to the police, recent research by the National Safe Kids campaign shows that at least 25 children die each year after being left in a hot car. During the summer months, the temperature inside a parked car can reach over 120 degrees in as little as 10 minutes.

Police day direct sunlight and a dark colored car can speed the process.

Snake causes power outage in southern Illinois

Franklin Co. firefighters train to save lives

When it comes to rescuing people from trapped cars, seconds can make the difference between life and death.

Firefighters from across Franklin County spent their Saturday training on how to rescue people trapped in vehicles.

Crews learned how to use special hydraulic tools to cut and pry the victims out of the wreckage.

In some cases they had to learn how to elevate a car while someone is trapped underneath it.

"We have what's called the golden hour from the time the crash happens until the patient is in surgical intervention," said Bryan Doyle with Illinois Fire Services Institute. "We have one hour to get that done. The more these fire fighters train, the quicker and more efficient they become to get that person out."

The high number of crashes on Interstate 57 was part of the reason why crews took the time to train Saturday.

Governor announces $100 million in funding to be given to local officials

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Governor Pat Quinn announced Thursday $100 million in Illinois Jobs Now! funding will be given to local officials to repair municipal, township and count infrastructure along with improving public safety.

“The important capital investment will help communities throughout our state to address their infrastructure needs directly and create jobs at the same time,” said Governor Quinn. “Our local communities are the backbone of Illinois and need to stay strong and keep our economic recovery going.”

The announcement is through the six-year, $31 billion program and represents the second of five $100 million annual investments to fund projects statewide.

The projects will be picked and managed locally, with the Illinois Department of Transportation providing insight.

Types of projects include street and bridge maintenance, upgraded traffic signals, new storm sewers and bike paths, sidewalk replacement and pothole repair.
