Ferris sentenced to life in prison for double murders

After a guilty verdict earlier this month, the girl convicted in the deadly shootings of two women at a home in West Frankfort in 2009 has learned her fate.

Sentencing was today for Afton Ferris at a Franklin County Court House.

A judge handed down 2 life sentences to run concurrently and 3 – 25 year sentences with an additional 75 years tacked on to that to run consecutively.

State's Attorney Evan Owens said, Ferris was the "cold calculated leader in this crime." "This defendant only has one live to give for the two lives she's taken. We asked for her life."

A Franklin County jury convicted Afton Ferris in July 2011 of killing Kandis Major and Terri Seibeck in their West Frankfort home in back October of 2009.

Costs add up in double murder trials

The man accused of killing two West Frankfort is another step closer to having his day in court. Michael Schallert went before a judge in Franklin County on Tuesday. He is accused of killing Kandis Majors and Terri Seibeck back in 2009.

Nearly two weeks ago, a Franklin County jury found Scalar's former girlfriend, Afton Ferris guilty of shooting Majors and Seibeck.

Meanwhile, the court bills continue to add up for Franklin County taxpayers.

Franklin County Board Chairman Randall Crocker thumbs through the budget knowing what happened in a West Frankfort home back in 2009 now takes a financial toll on his county.

"We haven't had anything like this and we are not prepared for it on the budget side," Crocker said.

Initially the state filed capital murder charges against both Ferris and Schallert.  That meant state dollars would help pay the court bills.

Postal Service considers closing three offices in Franklin Co.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The U.S. Postal Service has released a list of 3,700 post offices across the country that could be shut down to help save money.

The Postal Service introduced Tuesday the Village Post Office as a potential retail replacement option for affected communities around the nation. Village Post Offices will be operated by local businesses and would offer popular postal products and services.

"The Village Post Office will offer another way for us to meet our customers' needs." said Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.

"The Postal Service of the future will be smaller, leaner and more competitive and it will continue to drive commerce, serve communities and deliver value," added Donahoe in a press release Tuesday.

Several locations in Franklin County are on the list the close retail offices.
